It all began when the founders, Reuben and Irene Khoo, had to take their dad home from the hospital. Dad had a fall resulting in a hip fracture and had spent time recuperating in the community hospital. In need of help to care for Dad, they explored every option available in the market.
“We could sense that the last thing Dad wanted was to be in a nursing home. Dad felt safer being at home with his loved ones.
While there were choices for home-based care, we felt there was more to just performing the task of care. More than just quality care you can trust, there was a difference when caring for a loved one – it all comes down to the personal touch when you understand the person.
In our minds, for Dad to return home to be among his loved ones, with the aid of a domestic helper to tend to his care needs, would be the best option.
However we soon realized that though Dad’s physical care needs were met, he was not achieving positive health outcomes. Dad was becoming withdrawn, not interested in meals and showing signs of depression. His mental health started to take a toll on his physical health.
We felt the call to step up to be Dad’s caregivers. Knowing our Dad personally, we were able to engage Dad in things that could bring joy to him. To equip ourselves with better knowledge, we researched on aging and care. That was when we recognized that Dad was also having the onset of mild dementia.
After several months of personalized care, we could see Dad recovering gradually on all fronts – physically, mentally, and emotionally. Within a year, Dad was almost back to his normal self except for the occasional forgetfulness and walking around with the help of a walking aid.
Having had the experience, we are convinced that care provided with the right knowledge and putting the relationship first, beyond just tasks, makes a positive difference. Encouraged to change the approach to care-giving, we embarked on a journey to search globally for a home senior care provider embodying such qualities.”
